Dear Friends,

As many of you know, I’m the founder and editor-in-chief of Stories for Children Publishing, LLC., and its many divisions. I’m not only one of the editors, but I also write for these divisions. I founded Stories for Children Publishing based on three premises originally: 1) I love to write for children, 2) I love to share what I’ve learned as a writer and/or editor, 3) the more I honed my craft the more likely I would eventually get a book deal, so I thought. Notice neither the words “marketing” nor “platform” were on my list at first. But . . . they should have been.

I have learned over the years that by not doing all the little things to support your writing, you’re unlikely to get the big things—like a column or book deal or even have a book signing where attendee include more than just your mom, friends who feel obligated to be there, and your kids sixth grade teacher. That’s why all writers should read and research how to build a writing platform. Writer’s Digest has some great books on this subject and another great resource is Carolyn Howard-Johnson’s newsletter, “Sharing with Writers.” To subscribe to Sharing with Writers send an email with “Subscribe” in the subject line to: HoJoNews@aol.com.

The idea is to have it on your mind now for when the opportunities present themselves, even if you don’t have time to implement it now.

Lastly, be sure to check out the September 2009 issue of Stories for Children Magazine for the magnificent articles and stories, current writing contests, and to read the Featured Guest Author interview with New York Times Best-selling author, Brandon Mull.

And now, to the wonderful articles and information packed in this month’s newsletter.

In The Beginning—Find the Missing Pieces to Your Career Puzzle with Suzanne Lieurance, the Working Writer’s Coach. In My Office—Today’s agents are more likely to treat you like a paycheck than like the sensitive creative person you are. Their criteria: will your book sell? Not sure? Then check out what Patrika Vaughn has to say. In You’re Published—Writers and published authors need to take advantage of the number one method of book selling-the Internet. Want to know how? Yvonne Perry is a freelance writer and the owner of Writers in the Sky Creative Writing Services (WITS) and she’s here to give you some insight on how to do this. In The Writing Life— Read part 6 of author Simon Rose’s article, “Science Fiction and Fantasy For Younger Readers”. And finally, In Let It All Out!—Mindy Phillips Lawrence shares with us what to do when a partnership fades.

Yvonne Perry,

Thanks so much for your note and the offer to let me post something on your blog. I will definitely look for something to share with you on your blog. Just give me a couple of days to do the research and I will get back with you. This next two days are already booked up.

My Favorites:

I love the children's movies Wizard of Oz and the Neverending Story. Both movies make me feel the lesson that hope is alive and well. After seeing UP this past week, it just might have a chance at being added to this list.

I love the cool colors of blues and purples. Those colors are peaceful for me.

I love The Velveteen Rabbit. Even as an adult, I still feel the urge to cry when he becomes real. I know, silly, but a good book can make me laugh and cry as it takes me on a magical journey.
