Dear Friends,

As many of you know, I’m the founder and editor-in-chief of Stories for Children Publishing, LLC., and its many divisions. I’m not only one of the editors, but I also write for these divisions. I founded Stories for Children Publishing based on three premises originally: 1) I love to write for children, 2) I love to share what I’ve learned as a writer and/or editor, 3) the more I honed my craft the more likely I would eventually get a book deal, so I thought. Notice neither the words “marketing” nor “platform” were on my list at first. But . . . they should have been.

 

I have learned over the years that by not doing all the little things to support your writing, you’re unlikely to get the big things—like a column or book deal or even have a book signing where attendee include more than just your mom, friends who feel obligated to be there, and your kids sixth grade teacher. That’s why all writers should read and research how to build a writing platform. Writer’s Digest has some great books on this subject and another great resource is Carolyn Howard-Johnson’s newsletter, “Sharing with Writers.” To subscribe to Sharing with Writers send an email with “Subscribe” in the subject line to: HoJoNews@aol.com.

 

The idea is to have it on your mind now for when the opportunities present themselves, even if you don’t have time to implement it now.
