Posted on: November 26, 2009

http://www.underdown.org/mf-rhyme-and-meter.htm This is a December 2005 excerpt from Musings by Margot Finke. Be sure to check out the rest of the article as it has a lot to offer a writer.

Below are a variety of excellent resources that will help you unravel the mystery of writing rhyme and meter. Craft rhyming picture books that become dog-eared with love.

To Rhyme or Not to Rhyme” by Dori Chaconas. Read this amazing article. Dori nails the subject. Clear, precise information, and the many instructive examples make it seem easy. If you long to write great rhyme, this is one article you don’t want to miss.

Anastasia Suen: Take her picture book class if you want to study rhyme & meter. Her book, Picture Writing, is a must, if you plan to write in rhyme.

Beginners Site For Rhyme: Follow links to more advanced sections.

Poetry4kids: See how Jack Prelutsky, Shel Silverstein, Patricia Hubbell and others do it. Plus other poetry resources. Try Poetry Lessons first.

Writing Picture Books by Marisa Montes is a general introduction to writing picture books. You PB needs to have everything mentioned on this website, PLUS great rhyme and meter.

Peg, thanks so much for the promotion above. I love helping new writers. My Musings columns offer lots of help and advice for writers. Manuscript Critiques keep me busy with writers who need that final polish on their pages.

I have just finished adding several book trailers for “Wild and Wonderful” to my website. A 7 book rhyming series about US and Aussie critters. Fun facts that are kid friendly.

I am always happy to chat about writing, or answer questions from newcomers.

Margot,

Thanks for the response.

I’ve been reading your Musings for a while and have always

found them helpful.

I am always looking for ways to help my readers accheive their

goals. When I am unsure of how to answer a question, I’ll

send them your way.

I’ve always been attracted to Australian animals. My one

published nonfiction article was on the Quoll and appeared in

Stories for Children Magazine’s January 2009 issue.

Keep up the good work.

My Favorites:

I love the children's movies Wizard of Oz and the Neverending Story. Both movies make me feel the lesson that hope is alive and well. After seeing UP this past week, it just might have a chance at being added to this list.

I love the cool colors of blues and purples. Those colors are peaceful for me.

I love The Velveteen Rabbit. Even as an adult, I still feel the urge to cry when he becomes real. I know, silly, but a good book can make me laugh and cry as it takes me on a magical journey.
