My nephews inspire me.

For those of you that don’t know me that well, let me fill you in. I’m helping my brother to raise his sons, 8 and 10 going on 30. The boys have had some challenges in their short lives. Max the youngest has Aspergers. His case is such that it impairs his ability to have empathy for others. In the past year, his little mouth has spit out some of most unkind things to his friends and family especially when he is angry or upset. Prior to living with us, he spent most of his school time in the Principal’s office. He flipped chairs and desks and threatened other kids. He’s grown tremendous (with the help of medication and a lot of consistency from all in his life) and is becoming a great little guy.

Garrett has ADD, and suffered at school and in social relationships. Kids teased him all the time the first year he was here. (We’ve had him for a year and a half now.) He often got frustrated and banged on the walls. This year he has two friends that come over all the time. He is participating in drama club, art club and little league. He also pulled all A’s and B’s on his report card.

Today, I took them to a local pioneer museum, knowing that I might have to cut the visit short, and they blew my socks off. Max got interested in everything. He had perfect manners, without prompts. He ate foods that he has never tried before. I was so tickled for him.

Garrett had a great time. He loves historical stuff but we often have to stop what we are doing to redirect Max. His face was just glowing as he got to spend a two hour period looking at old farm equipment, a log cabin, and various army uniforms and stuff as well as a ton of other things. I heard their giggles and couldn’t stop giggling myself.

Not to mention the fact that for me, it is great start to a nonfiction article.

My Favorites:

I love the children's movies Wizard of Oz and the Neverending Story. Both movies make me feel the lesson that hope is alive and well. After seeing UP this past week, it just might have a chance at being added to this list.

I love the cool colors of blues and purples. Those colors are peaceful for me.

I love The Velveteen Rabbit. Even as an adult, I still feel the urge to cry when he becomes real. I know, silly, but a good book can make me laugh and cry as it takes me on a magical journey.
